Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Kompakt' (Green)
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Kompakt' Green (Crypt 'Kompact', Cryptocoryne wendtii 'compact', Dwarf Wendtii Crypt)
A green cultivar of Crytocoryne wendtii 'Kompackt' that, like the classic cultivar is an undemanding, fantastic beginner aquarium plant that is also strikingly beautiful and makes for an amazing foreground plant or a midground plant for small, "Nano Aquariums".
It is roughly a quarter the size of the classic Crytocoryne wendtii and Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Red' and grows much denser. When grown intentionally in small containers pushed under the substrate, it can be used as a carpet for simple, low-tech aquariums without the same lighting and CO2 requirements that more "traditional carpet plants" demand.
This particular cultivar is green in culture and will most likely remain green when planted in your aquarium. The typical Crypotocoryne wendtii 'Kompact' is a reddish-brown color and certain conditions such as high light and the composition of nutrients the substrate (high levels of iron for example) may bring out the "red rust" coloration that's more typical of the 'Kompakt' Crytocoryne wendtii variety.
In any case, Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Kompakt' is a beautiful and incredibly interesting specimen that will add something to any planted aquarium and is particularly well suited for beginners as a great easy aquarium plant to start with while still being an interesting and visually appealing plant for planted aquarium experts to try out in their aquascapes.
QUICK NOTES:
Difficulty: Easy
Size: 5 - 10cm in height, 3 – 10cm in rosette width
Native Range: Southeast Asia (Sri Lanka)
Position and Usage: Foreground or midground usage or carpet if planted densely.
Growth Rate: Slow to Fast
Lighting: 1/5 – 5/5
Water Conditions: pH of 6 – 8, temperature 75° to 82°F
CO2: Not required though will enhance growth rate dramatically
Propagation: Runners, division of large "mother plants" with budding offshoots (pups)
Special requirements: A dwarf cultivar of one of the most beautiful, yet undemanding, beginner-friendly, aquarium plants, Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Kompact' is undemanding and can be kept in nearly any tank. Like all Crypts, high nitrate levels and stable water conditions are recommended while a fertile substrate dramatically improves its growth and reproduction.
Though much less likely than traditionally with Crytocorynes species, sudden and dramatic changes in water chemistry or substrate chemistry (especially pH) may result in "Crypt melt" where the shoots and leaves of Crypts die off while the "subterranean" parts adapt to the new conditions and will produce new shoots and leaves.
